SMOKY MOUNTAIN SHAG CLUB
Minutes of Monthly Board Meeting
June 14, 2006
Location:
Home of June Terrell, 9432 Westland Crossing Way, KnoxvilleAttendees: President Donna Hooks, Secretary Marcia Lawson, and Treasurer June Terrell
Donna called the meeting to order at 7:30 p.m.
SECRETARY’S REPORT
The minutes of the May 10 Board Meeting were approved with one correction. June informed us that the amount of the seed money for the 2006 Boogie was $2,000 instead of $2,500 as previously reported. June will return this $2,000 to the general club account this month. Marcia will forward a copy of the May 10 Board minutes to Tom Marsh for our website.
2006 CHRISTMAS PARTY
Marcia has made an initial contact with the Marriott Hotel (same location as last year), assuming, as last year, that we will not be "invited" to return to Rothchild’s. The Marriott still has two Saturdays available in December; however, because of the cost, we would have to charge considerably more than we did last year (probably $25 per person). The Board did not feel the members would be willing to do that. Other options need to be explored.
QUARTERLY BUSINESS MEETING AND DANCE
The Board decided to hold a quarterly business meeting and dance on Saturday, July 1, at Dance Dimensions. This may also facilitate Bill Vann’s desire to meet with the Boogie 2007 committee chairs. A tentative schedule was set for 6:00 p.m. for the general membership meeting, with the committee chairs meeting with Bill a half-hour prior (at 5:30 p.m.).
The theme for this party will be "Independence Day." Donna will contact members about bringing portable grills for a cookout. The club will furnish the entree (burgers and hot dogs) to be paid partially from the $80 that Donna has left over from the previous party. Members will be asked to bring a dish to share. Marcia will check prices on wine.
(It has since been determined, however, that we would not try to conduct any business at this event because of the conflict with the holiday weekend.)
CLUB FUNDRAISERS
Donna has received a fundraiser promotion on a book, Shagging in the Carolinas, which dates the origin of the Shag back to 1929, earlier than previously purported, through copies of photos and newspaper articles. Donna will take the book to the July 1 party, and we’ll take orders then. The suggested selling price is $20, with the club keeping half. There is a minimum order of 100 books.
Another fund raiser is a blanket stitched with our club logo. Donna will also take this to the July 1 party.
It was suggested that what we don’t sell to our members of these two items could be held over and sold or raffled at the 2007 Boogie.
ASSOCIATION FUNDRAISER
At a recent ACSC meeting, each club was loaned a copy of the book, Shag, The Legendary Dance of the South, by Bo Bryan (with the suggestion that the club members be asked to autograph their copy) and then return it to the Association to be auctioned off. Proceeds will go to the Association to support their scholarship fund. Marcia will get the book from Sandra Barker and take it to the July 1 party.
NOMINATING COMMITTEE
At the July 1 meeting, the club members will be asked to select the Nominating Committee for this year’s election of officers. June suggested increasing the number of members of our Executive Board. Marcia noted that her experience has been that an executive board often is comprised of the elected officers, plus the committee chairs. She also noted that the first person seated on the Nominating Committee is usually delegated with the responsibilities of chairperson. Marcia is to ask Beverly to make the announcement of the July 1 party and selection of the Nominating Committee via the newsletter. Donna is to ask Pat Clark to notify our non-e-mail members. (See note above regarding the postponement of business at this event).
DANCE LESSONS
We are very thankful for the dedicated teachers we have had in the past (Bill and Beverly Hughes, Bill and Johnnie Vann, Jim Corbett, Jill Long, Tom and Ginny Marsh, and Donna Hooks), but we do not have anyone willing to assume the responsibilities of doing so at the present time.
TREASURER’S REPORT
June reported that we have a bank balance of $3,511.41 in our general club account and $5,198.75 in the Boogie account. This does not reflect the $2,000 seed money that is to be transferred from the Boogie account to the general account.
The meeting adjourned at 8:45 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Marcia Lawson, Secretary
