SMOKY MOUNTAIN SHAG CLUB
Minutes of Open Business Meeting
October 29, 2005
Location: Dance Dimensions, 8373 Kingston Pike
Donna called the meeting to order at 7 p.m. and began by thanking Maria for the use of her facility and by introducing the current Board members to the attendees. Donna explained the reason for having this event at Maria’s was because the Concord Yacht Club was not available and there was no other time available this month.
Donna reminded everyone that our annual Christmas party will be Saturday, January 17, at the downtown Marriott. Tom Marsh is working on flyers and he’ll post it on the website. Fee is $15 for members; $25 for nonmembers.
Donna announced that our next open business meeting will be January 21. Location to be determined.
Donna has prepared a questionnaire about committees and asked that everyone fill one out. This questionnaire will also be posted on the website.
Donna had copies made of the September and October Board meetings and announced that they were available tonight. As Marcia has opportunity, she will bring the binder with the past-meeting minutes and make it available on the piano on Sunday nights at the Holiday Inn. Donna will also make flyers for other club parties available.
Donna welcomed attendance of members at our future Board meetings. Out of courtesy, she asked that you call ahead if you have an item for discussion so that we can get it on the agenda.
If you have pictures from any Club events that you would like to share, please get them to Tom Marsh in digital form so that he can put on the website. Tom’s e-mail address is tommarsh@msn.com. He asked that you identify how you want the folder to be labeled.
Smoky Mountain Boogie
When: April 6-9, 2006 (NOT Easter weekend this year).
Location: Music Road Hotel, Pigeon Forge, great amenities. $84/night for room, $120/night for suites.
Workshops (FREE): Ellen Taylor and Sam West. We will also have a line-dance instructor and workshops on Hustle and West Coast Swing.
Smoke-free environment, 32 hours of dancing, free beer all weekend.
Committee chairs: Registration (Tom Marsh), Hospitality (Karen Sparks), 50/50 (Marcia Lawson), Floor (Dwight Robertson).
Bill announced that we have only sold about 50 tickets, which is about half of what we had sold same time last year. Many of our members have not purchased tickets yet. Bill commented that as a Club member, you are expected to support this event, both in attendance and as well as help on at least one of the committees. The motel is helping some with the hospitality functions, and Beverly Hughes recruited some of the members of the Louisville Bop Club to help with the 50/50. Way to go, Beverly! Donna encouraged us all to do some networking to help promote our party. THIS PARTY IS A TEAM EFFORT! WE NEED EVERYONE TO DO THEIR PART!
Donna opened the floor for questions:
Nicole asked about the rumor that we were moving our Sunday dance night from the Holiday Inn. Donna said that there was no truth to this rumor. For information, though, Donna advised the attendees that the Holiday Inn charges us $125/hour for a meeting room for our business meetings.
Because of having our open business meeting prior to a dance, Billy Kuhn asked if this might pose a problem with members desiring to bring a guest. (Is there any reason why a non-member would not be welcome?) It was agreed that anyone is welcome to attend; but, of course, nonmembers would not be allowed to vote.
Sandra Barker suggested putting the minutes of the monthly Board meetings on the website. All attendees seemed to be in agreement with that.
Bill Hughes asked if we were going to continue to plan monthly dances. Several people agreed that they were in favor of this idea.
Bill Hughes moved that we close the meeting. The meeting adjourned at 7:25 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Marcia Lawson, Secretary
