A Letter From SMS
President: Bill Hughes
Fellow Smoky Mountain Shaggers,
After reading this letter Beverly said it should be titled “the ramblings of the President”, so I’ll proceed to ramble.
We had a great election turn out with well over 50% of the members voting. Thanks for your support. Thanks, Election Committee, great job. Thanks Chuck for preparing the ballots.
Please join me In welcoming the next year’s Board of Directors. These people were chosen by you to handle the day to day operations of your Club so please support them. In the upcoming year the Club will need your help more that ever. One of our primary goals is to involve more people in the Club. A number of committees have been or are being established, and future Club functions are being planned. With the development of these committees, there will always be a need for more volunteers. Now is your chance to have the input you have always wanted in the operation of your Club. The following committees need volunteers:
-
50/50 Ticket Sales– Marcia Lawson
-
A.C.S.C. Parade - Dave Mitchell
-
Club Promotion? New Membership– Matt Bailey
-
Dance Committee– Terry Allen
-
Hospitality– Becky Trewhitt
-
Newsletter-Johnnie Vann
-
Phone Committee-Cassie Quinn
-
Smoky Mountain Boogie-Bill Hughes
-
Web Site - Chuck Kryder
If you have questions or comments concerning any of the above listed functions, please address them to the Chairperson of the appropriate committee.
I have a couple of question I want to ask:
1. How many times in the last three months did you visit the smokymountainshaggers.com ?
2. Did you read The Shag Rag Times?
3. Do you still have the latest copy of the Shag Rag Times?
These are three of the primary ways the Board has of distributing information to you, and that doesn’t include your attending the Sunday night dance, where you can interact with the Board and other Club members.

PARTY DATES
Our
next party is a combination Shag Workshop and
Dance Saturday June 8th at the Holiday
Inn Downtown Worlds Fair Site. We are very
fortunate to have Butch and Teresa Alsing to
instruct our workshop and the music for the dance
is sure to be good with DJ Larry Huff. So
get your tickets early for this event. ( ticket
prices increase after May 15th)
Friday
October 25th has
been selected for a repeat visit to the Concord
Yacht Club for a cookout and dance. This is
the Friday evening before the Tennessee vs.
Alabama football game and we hope to have visitors
from some of the Alabama Shag Clubs attend.
The
annual Christmas Party will be Friday December
20th , and will be at a new location this year.
Rothschild's in Ten Mile Center as been
selected to cater and provide our dance floor.
Our
fourth annual party is of course the Smoky
Mountain Boogie (which was just completed )
and as usual will be held the last week end in
March. The SMB V will again be
headquartered at The Glenstone Lodge In
Gatlinburg, with the dancing at the Mills
Auditorium.
Please
mark these dates on your calendar and look for
additional information on these events as well as
some other surprises in the coming months.

* The Web site is the best source for the latest news and Club updates. It is the most efficient way for the Board of Directors and the Committees to keep you informed of the latest Club developments. I want to encourage all of you to visit the Club Web site often. The Web site will be updated monthly with the latest copy of the Newsletter , new information from the committees, SMS event dates and the Smoky Mountain Boogie Flyer. The Web Site address is smokymountainshaggers.com. The address will be on the front page of the newsletter starting in September and if you forget, look at the Smoky Mountain Shaggers banner over the dance floor at Spinets.
The Newsletter is another good source of information. If you don’t have access to the Internet the newsletter contains a lot of the same information as the Web Site. Please read the Newsletter and keep it for future reference.
The latest communication tool will be the Phone Committee. Cassie will need volunteers, so ask if you can help. Don’t wait for Cassie to come and ask you.
I would like to see our Club become more involved in the Shag Dance and the Shag World. To help with the Shag Dance portion the Board has asked Terry Allen to head a Dance Committee and Terry has accepted. As for involvement in the Shag World our Club needs more active S.O.S. participation.
Participation in the A.C.S.C. Spring Safari Parade will be a great place to start. Our East Tennessee Heritage is full of things we can use in the parade such as Mountains, Bears, Hillbillies, Moonshine Stills and the list goes on and on. All we need is creative minds and a willingness to become involved in the Club.
There are other things I could talk about and more questions I could ask but, Johnnie says they will have to wait.
Thanks,
Bill Hughes |

Fellow Club Members:
I am excited to have the opportunity to coordinate our Newsletter. I hope you find it informative and something you look forward to each quarter.
If there is information you feel would be interesting to fellow club members please share it with me and I will include as space permits; this is your newsletter and we need your participation.
Our next newsletter will be mailed in January, we will have a copy deadline of December 15th (we will hold space for the Christmas Party coverage), The spring newsletter will be published after the Smoky Mountain Boogie to be mailed early April, with a deadline for stories March 15th, however we will reserve space to highlight Smoky Mountain Boogie information, the Summer newsletter will be published in June with a deadline of June 15th and the Fall Edition will publish in late August 2003 with a copy deadline of August 15th.
I am in process of asking for participation from Club Members to help coordinate this project. Carolyn Craft and Beverly Hughes have agreed to be party reporters, I still need several more reporters. It would be great to have a Club Photographer at every party and on Sunday Nights. The more people we have involved the better Newsletter we will have.
